Healthy Lifestyle – Live (your) life to the fullest!

I pass this lifestyle document out to my patients. It contains universally accepted truths. I want to make it available to all. It is simple and can be followed by everyone. Patients having dietary restrictions or allergies to certain foods are advised to consult their doctors. And use the document. Happy living!

A healthy lifestyle is the essence of modern living.

Lifestyle changes to be followed for a healthy living

  1. Get up before sunrise every day. And try getting up at the same time. ‘Early to bed and early to rise’ is relevant even today.
  2. Be thankful to the Almighty for giving you a new life (yes, sleep is considered the ‘sister’ of
    death!).
  3. Once awake, consume a glass of lukewarm water with half a lemon (if you are below 75 Kilograms) and a full lemon (if you are above 75 Kilograms) along with a spoonful of honey and a few grains of Kalonji (Nigella sativa) seeds.
  4. Brush your teeth before going to sleep. Night-time brushing is more important than early-morning brushing). Anyways, you can brush your teeth first thing in the morning too or since you would have already brushed in the night, you can use a Miswaak (Salvadora persica) or any other similar item or gargle your teeth with plain water. And brush your teeth after breakfast – this is the French style – if you like it, you can adapt it.
  5. After the initial lemon, honey, Kalonji, and lukewarm water mixture, consume two bananas. Next, drink your favorite beverage – milk, tea, or coffee.

Give preference to proteins

  1. Eat a high-protein breakfast within half an hour of getting up in the morning. Include all the essential nutrients in all your meals.
  2. Avoid the three ‘white poisons’ as much as possible – I am forced to use the word ‘poison’ –
Rice, Oil, Sugar. Utilize olive oil – even though it’s costly, it’s the best! Go for Indian brands – they tend to be cheaper.
  3. Try replacing Rice with alternatives like wheat, ragi, bajra, jawar, etc.
  4. Reduce the carbohydrates and increase the proteins (eggs, chicken, mutton, fish, etc.).
  5. In between meals, make sure to have at least five servings of fruits and vegetables. This will give
    your body the essential fibers.
  6. But never forget this – ‘Eat your breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a
    pauper!’
  7. You can have several ‘power naps’ during the day – there’s no harm in this – blood
circulation will increase in the brain and you tend to get refreshed and recharged after the
    break!
  8. After lunch, have a siesta of about twenty minutes – this will recharge your body and
    mind.
  9. Have your dinner right after sunset. Please do not sit after you consume your dinner – move
around lightly for about five minutes.

A night of good sleep is very essential!

  1. Go to bed as early as possible limiting exposure to any electronic media at least
half an hour before sleep. Late Karunanidhiji used to wake up sharp at 4 a.m. every day
    – he had a razor-sharp brain!
  2. 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. is the best time to sleep. While scientists advocate eight hours of sleep,
even less works for many people. Some people like Late Jawaharlal Nehruji
and Indira Gandhiji used to sleep for just three to three and half hours. Chandrababu Naidu
manages with just four hours of sleep. And still maintains a healthy lifestyle!
  3. Do a few minutes of meditation or leave your mind blank for a few minutes every day.
  4. Donate to charity as much as possible, have a cheerful attitude, and leave everything to the
    Almighty.
  5. Exercise regularly every day. Avoid motor vehicles as much as possible. Use bicycles to move around. Try walking for at least thirty minutes every day. This will help you remain fit for life.
  6. Have healthy relationships with your family members – increase the bonding by eating together as much as possible. Remember – ‘The family that eats together stays together!’
  7. Keep few but good friends. Remember books are a wo/man’s best friend.
  8. Avoid having grudges against anybody – this will weaken you. Make peace with everyone. ‘Forgive and forget’.
  9. Lastly, avoid unnecessary usage of medicines, especially allopathic. Allopathic medicines are best used only in emergencies. Complementary & Alternative Medicine (CAM) is best for nearly all medical conditions. Homeopathy, which doesn’t cause any side effects, comes under CAM.
